Advice for Issues Today Guests

Welcome to Issues Today, a television program that has received commendations from the California State Senate and California State Assembly.

This program provides you an opportunity to educate viewers about topics on which you are knowledgeable and opinionated.  Normally, a show runs approximately 28 minutes and there are two co-hosts, one guest (you), and no studio audience.  The co-hosts strive to ask you questions that facilitate your providing your knowledge, viewpoints, and recommendations.

Your taping date is Tuesday, __________________  ____, 200_, at 7:30 P.M.  The studio address and driving directions are provided in item C. below.

Your program will likely be shown on cable Channel 15 throughout San Jose, California, starting at 7:30 P.M. on the Wednesday either 1 or 8 days later.  San Jose is the tenth largest United States city.  The program may be presented elsewhere, including in the Silicon Valley cities of Campbell and Saratoga.

You can obtain – a few days after your show is taped – a DVD, CD, or tape of your appearance.  (One guest distributed 2,500 copies of a tape of his appearance.)

At least 7 days before your taping date, please provide the following information to the director at the studio (Emerson Dong – emerson_dong@cable.comcast.com) and one of the co-hosts (as noted below).

1.     Text to be superimposed on the televised image, for some of the time you are speaking.  You can have one or two sets of text.  Each set can have a maximum is three brief lines, of which the first should be your name and the other two should be an organization, phone, or web site.

  • First set of text -

      Line 1 (your name)
      Line 2 (see paragraph above):
      Line 3 (see paragraph above):

  • Second set of text (optional)-

      Line 1 (your name):
      Line 2 (see paragraph above):
      Line 3 (see paragraph above):

At least 7 days before your taping date, please provide the following information to one of the co-hosts (as noted below).

    2.     Information that will help the co-hosts prepare.  Please strive to provide the co-hosts enough information to produce a good show, but not for completeness.

___ Contact information – phone numbers, fax number, and e-mail address, in case the co-hosts need to contact you before or on the taping date.

___ A list of topics, points you would like to make, or suggested questions the co-hosts can ask you.  Please aim to provide enough items so that the show will remain vital for 28 minutes but not so many items that you cannot cover most of them during that length of time.

___ Biographic information.  Please provide a few points you want the co-hosts to mention.

___ Introduction(s) to organization(s) you want to mention.  Please provide a few points you want the co-hosts to know or mention – for example, mission, vision, goals, successes, opportunities, and/or challenges.

___ Information about any CD-based or DVD-based materials you would like to be played (visually, audibly, or both) by the studio staff during the program.

___ Other information – such as articles, briefing materials, or an overview of a book you have written and want to exhibit during the program.  If the material to be exhibited is other than one book, please discuss such with a co-host before the taping date.

For the day of the program, please note the following advice.

      A.    If you desire to feature a book or other printed materials, consider bringing a stand for placement on a table.  If you want the co-hosts to read a specific passage from or refer to a specific section in a book, please provide appropriate means (e.g., 2 copies of the book) to facilitate such.

      B.    Bring a copy any relevant CD or DVD for the studio staff to insert excerpts into the program.  Bring instructions for the staff.

      C.    Attire is normally “business.”

      D.    Taping occurs at the Comcast facilities at 1900 South Tenth Street, San Jose, California.  (From I-280, take the 10th Street Exit, go south approximately 1.3 miles, and turn left into the parking lot in front of the building.  Park in front of the building, preferably on the right (as you face the building).  Then, go around to the right {south} side of building.  Enter through the door marked Comcast – The Community Channel.)

      E.    Please arrive by 7:30 P.M.  This will provide time for you and the co-hosts to prepare, especially by discussing with you your background and topics.  If, “at the last moment” it appears you will be late, please contact the production staff via telephone at 408.918.3200 extension 3669 or at 408.918.3266.  (Their fax number is 408.294.7378.)

      F.     To obtain a recording (DVD or video tape) of your show, please make arrangements (when you arrive at the studio) through a co-host.  Comcast charges a fee of $20 or $25 per copy, depending on whether you want the studio staff to send the copy to you.  If you do not you’re your copies sent to you, normally, you can pick up the copies at the studio as early as the Friday after taping.  If you obtain a copy, you can make further copies.

      G.    The co-hosts and production staff tape two programs per session.  If yours is the second program, you may sit in the studio and observe the first taping or wait in the reception area until it is time for your program.

      H.    To return to I-280, turn right out of the parking lot, go north on Tenth Street, follow the “forced jog to the right” one block to Eleventh Street, turn left, and go north on Eleventh Street.

We appreciate your appearing on Issues Today and desire to work with you to make your show valuable for the viewers and you.  Please do not hesitate to contact us for further discussion.
